Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon chia seeds about 12 g
  • 1 cup cold or room-temperature filtered water 8 oz
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice about ½ lemon, optional
  • Lime or orange slices for a different flavor (optional)

Equipment

  • 1 tall drinking glass or mason jar (12–16 oz), 1 piece
  • Measuring spoons (tablespoon), 1 set
  • Liquid measuring cup (1 cup / 8 oz), 1 piece
  • Spoon, small whisk, or fork for stirring, 1 piece
  • Citrus juicer or reamer (optional, for fresh lemon juice)
  • Jar with an airtight lid (optional, for make-ahead and fridge storage)
  • Coffee or spice grinder (optional, for a smoother ground-chia version)

Method

  1. Add the seeds. Pour 1 cup of water into your glass or jar, then add 1 tablespoon of chia seeds.
  2. Stir right away. Stir vigorously for about 30 seconds so the seeds separate and don't form clumps.
  3. Let it soak. Rest the glass for 10 to 15 minutes, until the seeds swell and the water turns gel-like. If you use very cold water, give it a little longer.
  4. Stir again. Break up any seeds that have settled at the bottom of the glass.
  5. Flavor it. Stir in the lemon juice if you're using it.
  6. Drink. Sip it slowly, seeds included. Don't drink it before a gel has formed.

Notes

Always soak first: Dry chia seeds swell a lot after you swallow them. Never eat dry seeds and chase them with water.
Start small. If you're new to chia, begin with 1 teaspoon to ½ tablespoon in a full glass and build up over 1–2 weeks. Too much fiber too fast can cause bloating and gas.
Drink plenty of water through the day. Fiber needs fluid to work well.
Thinner drink: Use 2 cups of water for the same 1 tablespoon of chia.
Smoother texture: Grind the seeds before soaking.
Make ahead: Soak in a covered jar in the fridge overnight and use within about 24 hours. Stir before drinking.
Keep calories low: Honey, maple syrup, and juice add calories quickly. One teaspoon of honey adds about 21 calories.
Best time to drink: There's no proven best time. Many people drink it about 30 minutes before a meal or as a swap for a sweet drink.
Check first if you take blood thinners, blood-sugar or blood-pressure medication, or have swallowing problems, IBS/IBD, or a seed allergy. Chia is not a magic fat burner and works best alongside balanced meals and movement.
